The History of NOMOS Glashütte

Boasting a rich heritage as one of Germany’s most esteemed watchmakers, NOMOS Glashütte is known the world over for its superior artisan manual-winding and automatic mechanical watches. Following its establishment in 1990, the watchmaker first introduced its Tangente, Ludwig, Tetra and Orion models in 1992. The clean and modern aesthetic applied throughout the range incorporated elements drawn from the famous Bauhaus school of art, an influence that would continue to play a role in later designs.

Widely recognised as the home of German watchmaking, the Saxon town of Glashütte still houses several NOMOS Glashütte facilities. Operating out of the beating heart of German watchmaking, the brand has long prided itself on its marriage of quality craftmanship and timeless design.

Watches produced by NOMOS Glashütte have made use of various types of mechanics throughout the company’s existence. Movements used in early models were primarily hand-wound and sourced from Swiss manufacturers until the company brought the manufacture of these mechanisms entirely in-house. This paved the way for the brand to begin production of its very own movements, culminating in the introduction of the Tangomat – NOMOS Glashütte’s first automatic model – back in 2005.

New technologies and designs continued to emerge in the years that followed. Having developed the capability to produce its own calibres and escapements, the range of models available expanded significantly. Newly introduced models included the 2007 Club, a hand-wound model offering optional automatic winding, and the 2009 Zurich, an automatic model with a range of added functions and dial colours. Later models offer an even wider variety of mechanics, styles, functions and sizes, with prime examples being the 2013 Ahoi, the 2015 Minimatik and the 2018 Autobahn.

To date, NOMOS Glashütte has been the recipient of more than 160 awards spanning the length and breadth of their collection, including the German Design Award, the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève (GPHG), the Red Dot Design Award and the iF Product Design Award. All in all, the brand’s unshakable commitment to detail and authenticity has earned it a position amongst the world’s greatest watchmakers, successfully shaping itself as a champion of German horology.
