Doxa Watches

Doxa is the Greek word for glory, and now, it is also synonymous with quality, value and performance driven timekeeping. Discover our coveted collection of DOXA watches, including best selling models from the SUB 200, SUB 300 and SUB 1500T lines.

History of DOXA Watches

Montres Doxa S.A was established in 1889 by Georges Ducommun. Georges was just 21 years of age at the time the company was founded in the small Swiss town of Le Locle, which today, enjoys a boastful reputation in the market of luxury timekeeping.

The company began by producing exceptional pocket watches that benefited from Georges’ attention to detail and customer focus, which even included a 20km walk to hand deliver a watch. One of the biggest differentiators of DOXA watches, which is just as much present in today’s collections as it was all those years ago, is the constant drive for improvement. During Georges’ time running the company, at no point did he settle and become satisfied with his products. Rather, the innovator took any opportunity to tweak and develop his watches in order to become the benchmark standard in a competitive marketplace.

Over the years, Georges’ efforts paid off. In 1905, his pocket watch was honored at the Exposition Universelle et Internationale, a World’s Fair held in Liège, Belgium. In 1906, the anti-magnetic DOXA watch won the gold medal at the World’s Fair in Milan, Italy.

This same knack for innovation and constant improvement also helped DOXA become the standard equipment in Bugatti’s racing cars in the early 20th century. The rise of endurance motorsports during this time unveiled problems with current equipment, presenting the Swiss watch brand an opportunity to do what it does best. From this, the 8 day DOXA caliber was born, setting the industry standard for instrument panels in automobiles, and later, ships and airplanes.

Following the passing of the founder in 1936, son in law, Jacques Nardin took over the company. Focus remained on performance driven sport and travel timepieces, and innovation continued to be a key value. This welcomed alarm clocks and ring watches to the collection and the inclusion of technical advancements, such as date pointers and jumping seconds hands in timepieces.

DOXA watches have long been recognised for their aesthetic appeal, which saw the production of some exceptional dress watches in the early 1900s. Towards the second half of the century, the brand had also cemented its position in the sports watch market, with the professional grade SUB dive watch. The timepiece was developed in collaboration with diving legend Jacques-Yves Cousteau, and to this day, enjoys benchmark status for military and professional diving standards.

Like for many watchmakers, the quartz crisis of the late 1900s presented unimaginable challenges. However, unlike others in DOXA’s position, the brand was able to survive the turbulence and establish itself as one of the greats in Swiss luxury timekeeping. The turn of the century was overseen by new management and a relocated base in Biel/Bienne, Switzerland.

Today, DOXA produces some of the most desirable luxury timepieces on the market, with a diverse range of models available for collectors, beginners and professionals alike.
