History of Longines La Grande Classique watches
By the 1980s, Longines had already been operating for over 100 years. In the first century of their existence, a lot had changed about the brand. From early beginnings making pocket watches in Switzerland to becoming a household name, Longines was famous for its elegant products and innovations in watchmaking technology.
As the late 1970s approached, the company decided to launch a new collection. Longines had already begun experimenting with thinner watches, and in 1979 it released the first-ever piece that was less than 2mm thick. The Feuille d’Or (Gold Leaf) was a quartz watch that stood at just 1.98mm wide and marked yet another technological breakthrough for the company.
In order to achieve its slight frame, Longines had invested in revolutionary technology which allowed the mechanics of the watch to be incorporated in a much smaller way. Three years later and the Agassiz line was launched. Named after the brand’s founder, this range featured a number of much thinner watches complete with 18-carat gold frames. From here the La Grande Classique range was born.
Officially launched in 1992, It proved to be an instant success with customers and critics alike going mad for the new ultra-thin design. Today, Longines La Grande Classique remains hugely popular and can be purchased in a number of styles and colours. With variations available for both men and women the line is designed to celebrate Longines’ timeless sophistication.
