Do automatic watches need a battery?
Automatic watches work without a battery. The kinetic energy generated by the wearer’s natural movements generates power in the mainspring which then stores and releases energy.
What is a power reserve?
A power reserve refers to the length of time a watch can function before the mechanism stops.
Do automatic watches need to be manually wound?
As automatic watches are charged by kinetic movement, they will wind themselves as you wear them. If your watch is not being worn or powered by movement, then it will stop working. However, you will need to wind it manually the first time you wear it.
How do you wind an automatic watch?
Remove your watch from your wrist so as not to confuse the mechanism.
For a classic automatic, wind the crown around 30 times in a clockwise motion. For a sports automatic, begin by screwing the crown 3-4 times anti-clockwise until you feel the crown pops out, then continue to wind your crown 30 times clockwise.
Set the date by pulling the crown out from the winding position and moving it in a clockwise motion.
Set the time by pulling the crown out once more and moving the crown either clockwise or anticlockwise.
Screw the crown all the way back in and wind it clockwise to lock it in place.
Can an automatic watch be overwound?
Your automatic watch cannot be overwound. Due to its infinitely-slipping mainspring, once your watch is fully wound, the winding gears will disengage from the mainspring.
How often do automatic watches need to be serviced?
We recommend having your automatic watch serviced every 3-5 years to ensure your watch remains in its best condition. Our experts are on-hand to advise you if you should wait longer or go sooner depending on your specific timepiece.
Should automatic watches be worn all the time?
You can wear your automatic watch as much or as little as you like. Wearing it daily will keep the mechanism working, however, you can use a watch winder to place your watch in for the days you are not wearing it.
