History of white gold engagement rings

White gold is an alloy that is made by adding nickel or zinc to pure gold. Generally, 18ct white gold contains 75% pure gold and 25% nickel or zinc. In jewellery and engagement rings, the alloy is usually plated with rhodium in order to create the lustre which pieces are so often chosen for.

White gold became commercially available in the early 1900s. The metal alloy quickly gained popularity in the jewellery market as an affordable alternative to platinum. At the onset of WWII, platinum was labelled a strategic metal, which significantly limited its supply and drove even more demand for the gold alternative.

Although platinum is readily available today, white gold remains a popular choice for engagement rings for a variety of reasons.

Benefits of white gold engagement rings

White gold is a popular choice for an engagement ring because of the following benefits:

  • Affordable - white gold is often more affordable than other engagement ring metals, including platinum and yellow gold
  • High quality - although more affordable, white gold is a high quality metal choice for rings, particularly alloys which contain a higher percentage of gold
  • Lustre - white gold possesses a lustre that no other metal type has. It’s pale luminescence is a beautiful, stylish and incredibly timeless, making it the perfect choice for an engagement ring that will be worn everyday for the rest of your life
  • Diverse - the stylish lustre of the metal also pairs perfectly with almost every type and colour of stone and diamond

The difference between white gold and platinum

It is common for white gold to be mistaken for platinum when viewing engagement rings. Although the two metal types may have some things in common, such as their bright lustre and ability to pair perfectly with a range of stones, they are very different.

Platinum is one of the most durable metal types, which makes it incredibly suitable for an engagement ring that will be worn by someone who carries out a lot of work with their hands. However, if a white gold ring is cared for adequately, for example taken off during hands on tasks and regularly serviced, there is no reason it will not retain it’s condition for the many years to come.

White gold is also much more affordable than platinum. This is because platinum requires a high level of skill to craft, whereas white gold is much easier to work with and can be made into many beautiful, high quality designs. A larger quantity of platinum is also required for rings of the same calibre as a quality white gold design.

However, both metal types make for a great choice for an engagement ring. Here at Wallace Allan, we stock an extensive collection of white gold and platinum engagement rings, which you can shop here
